Rules

General Information

The 16th International Competition “Dimitri Mitropoulos” for Conducting will be held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from May 28th to 31st, 2024.

The competitors will conduct the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.

Notification of the 12 successful candidates, selected on the basis of the videos and application material.

The successful candidates must confirm their participation.
Should any of the candidates fail to communicate their intention to participate or decide not to attend, their place will be taken by the next runner-up.

Schedule

Tuesday May 28th – Round A

Hours: 10:00 – 13:30 (3 hours of total rehearsal time and a half hour break)
12 candidates
Candidates will have 15 minutes of rehearsal time.

Candidates will be asked to conduct the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra in extracts from the given Repertoire list.

A maximum of six (6) competitors will be admitted to the second round.

Day 01

Wednesday May 29th – Round B

Hours: 10:00 – 13:30 (3 hours of total rehearsal time and a half hour break)
6 candidates
Candidates will have 30 minutes of rehearsal time.

Candidates will be asked to conduct works or extracts from the given Repertoire list.

A maximum of three (3) competitors will be admitted to the final round.

Day 02

Thursday May 30th – Round C

(concert preparation)

3 candidates

10:00 – 13:00 (first two candidates)

and 18:30 – 20:00 (third candidate)

Candidates will conduct about 30-minute symphonic programme with works (or extracts) from the Repertoire list specified by the Jury at the end of the second round.

To prepare for this programme, the candidates will have one hour and fifteen minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) rehearsal with the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.

Day 03

Friday May 31st

(Final Round of the Competition: Public concert and ceremony)

General Rehearsal: 10:00 – 13:00

Candidates will conduct the repertoire specified for the final round.

Candidates will have 50 minutes of rehearsal time.

The Final Round will be open to the public, at 21:00 at the Megaron Concert Hall.

Day 04

Accommodation

Competitors should arrive in Thessaloniki by May 27th, 2024 in the afternoon. Accommodation will be provided free of charge in a 3* hotel to the successful candidates of the 2nd round including the night of the day on which the competitor is eliminated.

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756- 1791): Symphony Nο. 39 in E♭ major K. 543

Order of Appearance

The order of appearance is determined by ballot before each round.

Prizes

  • 1st Prize: 14.000 Euro
  • 2nd prize: 7.000 Euro
  • 3rd prize: 3.000 Euro

The first prize winner will also receive the possibility of concerts with:

  • the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra
  • the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra
  • the Opera Plovdiv, Bulgaria
  • the Greek Radio Symphony Orchestra

Regulations - Terms

Application

In order to participate, the candidates have to fill in the on-line application form and send all the required documents not later than April 15th, 2024.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The following documents must be enclosed with the application form:
a) Birth certificate or copy of passport or identity card
b) One recent photograph
c) Curriculum vitae
d) Copies of Study Diplomas or Awards
e) Proof of payment of registration fee
f) Video recording (youtube or vimeo), unedited, showing the competitor conducting an orchestra in rehearsal and/or concert situations (if possible two works or more), of a total length of 10-15 minutes

Registration Fee

Your name must appear on the deposit.
Participants must deposit the net amount of 90€ euros by bank transfer. Please note that the costs of the transfer are borne by the depositor.
