Rules

General Information

The 17th International Competition “Dimitri Mitropoulos” for Composers will be held in Thessaloniki, Greece, on November 2nd, 2025.

The Competition will take place at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, and its final round will be open to the public.

The musical works of the finalists will be performed by the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.

The successful candidates must confirm their participation. Should any of the candidates fail to communicate their intention to participate or decide not to attend, their place will be taken by the next runner-up.

November, 2nd 2025

General Rehearsal 10:00 – 13:00 Thessaloniki Concert Hall. Each contestant’s work will be assigned 35 minutes to be rehearsed by the Orchestra. The order in which the contestants’ works are performed will be determined by the Conductor in coordination with the orchestra’s Administration, ensuring optimal continuity and minimal disruption for the orchestra during the concert.

Final Round of the Competition. Concert at 20:00 and announcement of the results.
The Final Round of the Competition (concert) will take place in Thessaloniki Concert Hall. Tickets presale www.tsso.gr. It will also broadcasted live and free by the official TSSO channel on YouTube @TheTSSO

Travel and Accommodation in Thessaloniki

The contestants must be in Thessaloniki by the 1st of November 2025 (in order to be present for the general rehearsal on 2/11 and for the Final).
The contestants, should they wish, may also be present for the pre-general rehearsal which takes place on the 1st of November (in which case, they need to arrive in Thessaloniki by the 31st of October 2025).

The Competition will:
• cover travel expenses up to 700 euros for the transportation of the finalists to and from Thessaloniki on economy class (upon the announcement of the qualification results for the Final, further information will be sent to the contestants).
• cover accommodation expenses (b&b) of the candidates, for a 4-star hotel which will be chosen by the Competition (upon the announcement of the qualification results, further information will be sent to the finalists). The Competition will cover the cost of two-night stays (1st and 2nd of November). The Competition may also cover the accommodation expenses for the night of the 31st of October at the same hotel, for any contestants who wish to be present for the pre-general rehearsal.

Composition

The duration of a contestant’s composition must be between 10 minutes (minimum) and 20 minutes (maximum).

The contestants’ works must be original compositions which have not been submitted to participate in other competitions or have been performed or presented publicly.

The contestants are asked to compose original works for symphony
orchestra. The orchestra will provide at maximum the following instruments:

Order of Appearance

The contestants’ pieces will be ordered for performance at the Final round as fits best the needs of the concert, at the decision of the conductor in consultation with the orchestra’s administration.

Other Regulations

The contestants’ pieces will be numbered and forwarded to the jury without disclosing the names of the composers

Prizes

  • 1st Prize: 14.000 Euro
  • 2nd Prize: 7.000 Euro
  • 3rd Prize: 3.000 Euro

Following the performance of the last finalist’s work in the Final Round of the Competition, the Jury will deliberate and decide regarding the awarding of the following three prices.

This year’s medals were produced with the kind permission of the Music Library “Lilian Voudouri” of the Friends of Music Society, to which the mold of the original medal has been entrusted.

Application

In order to participate, the candidates have to fill in the on-line application form and send all the required documents not later than August 31st, 2025.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The following documents must be enclosed with the application form:
a) Birth certificate or copy of passport or ID
b) One recent photograph
c) Curriculum vitae
d) Optionally: Copy of academic degree certification (if available)
e) Proof of payment of the registration fee
f) Contact information: e-mail, mobile phone number, WhatsApp number
g) Score/sheet music of the submitted work in electronic format (PDF file)
h) Optionally: MIDI file of the submitted work (if applicable)

Registration Fee

Your name must appear on the deposit.
Participants must deposit the net amount of 90€ euros by bank transfer. Please note that the costs of the transfer are borne by the depositor.
