For Orchestral Conducting

The fourtienth year of the Dimitris Mitropoulos International Competition, organized by the Orchestra of Colours in collaboration with the Megaron, The Athens Concert Hall, was completed with the final prizewinners’ concert on 3rd  November 2010, held in the Athens Concert Hall.The three finalists had been selected from among 16 candidates, short-listed from a total number of 217 applicants from 44 countries.

In addition to the above three main prizes, there was additional the Orchestra’s Preference Award, for which the members of the orchestra took a vote. This prize was awarded as follows:

The prize winners were also presented with a portrait of Dimitris Mitropoulos, painted by the Greek painter Iannis Psychopaidis.The Dimitris Mitropoulos International Competition is organized under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Tourism and Culture.








 
Alexander Solovyev
Russia

He was born in 1975. He graduated from the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music in 1998 and did a postgraduate degree in choral and orchestra conducting (under leading conductor V. Fedoseev). Since 2000 he has been teaching conducting at the Russian Academy of Music. From 1995 to 2010 Alexander Solovyev worked for the Moscow Chamber Choir as a second conductor. During this period he collaborated with K. Nagano, J. Nelson, M. Viotti, C. Scimone, Y. Bashmet, M. Pletnev, V. Fedoseev and others. He has taken part in recordings for the Naxos label of the Deutsche Grammophon. Since 2006 he has given several concerts with various Russian orchestras and since 2010 he has been working at the Moscow Center of Opera Singing.
   
 
Tomaš Brauner
Czech Republic

Born in 1978 he studied oboe and conducting at the Prague Conservatoire graduating in 1999 and in 2001 respectively. At the Prague Academy of Music he studied under Prof. Radomil Eliška, Prof. Josef Kuchinka, Prof. František Vajnar and Associate Prof. Petr Vronský, then he continued as a guest student at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, where he worked under Prof. Uroš Lajovi?. He has also participated in master classes with Prof. Kurt Masur in Wroc?av. In 2006 he was appointed permanent guest conductor of the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, and since 2008 he has collaborated with the opera company of the Pilsen J.K.Tyl Theatre and the State Opera of Prague.

   
 
Stilian Kirov
Bulgaria

Currently Assistant Conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Memphis Youth Symphony Program, he has conducted major orchestras in France, Germany, Italy, U.S. and his native Bulgaria. S.Kirov has been awarded numerous prizes and commendations including the Charles Schiff Conducting Award for outstanding achievement at the Juilliard School and the Bruno Walter Memorial Scholarship, among others. He was also named laureate of the 2nd Talented Conductors Edition  of the Adami Association and invited to conduct a concert with Orchestre Colonne at Salle Gaveau, Paris, in October 2010. Stilian Kirov has conducted major orchestras including the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, the New World Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra, the Orchestre de Massy, the Thüringen Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany) and the Sofia Festival Orchestra, among others. S.Kirov studied with such distinguished conductors as Michael Tilson Thomas, Gianluigi Gelmetti and Asher Fisch and graduated from the Orchestral Conducting Program of The Juilliard School where he studied with Maestro James DePreist.
